October 13, 2013 - Neshaminy Creek, Stewart's, Tröegs, Sly Fox & Yards Pace Local GABF Results
Led by Gold Medals for Neshaminy Creek Brewing, Stewart's Brewing and Tröegs Brewing and double wins by Sly Fox Beer, Troegs and Yards Brewing, Philadelphia regional breweries earned 13 medals at yesterday's Great American Beer Festival Awards Ceremony in Denver. Four medals won by other Pennsylvania breweries brought the tri-state region's total to 17.

Tröegs Tröegenator Double Bock took its 4th Gold Medal since 2006 (it also won two Silvers during that stretch) in the Bock category and the brewery also took Bronze for Sunshine Pils in the German-style Pilsener category. Sly Fox Grisette took a Silver (Belgian and French-Style Ale) and Oktoberfest won Bronze (Vienna-Style Lager). Yards Brawler earned Silver in the English-Style Mild grouping and Poor Richard's Tavern Spruce got Bronze in the Indigenous Beer category. Neshaminy Creek's Gold Medal was for Chuchville Lager (Vienna-Style Lager) and Stewart's Gold was for Stumblin' Monk (Belgian-Style Strong Specialty Beer).

Silver medals were won by Dogfish Head Midas Touch (Specialty Honey Beer), Flying Fish OktoberFish (American-style Amber Lager), McKenzie Dark and Stormy (Wood- and Barrel-Aged Sour Beer), Iron Hill Russian Imperial Stout (Imperial Stout) and Rock Bottom KOP The Hammer (Baltic Porter).

Elsewhere in Pennsylvania, Erie's Lavery Brewing Liopold Ior took Gold (French-and Belgian-Style Saison), Bloomsburg's Marley's Brewery and Grill Pack Dog Peanut Butter Ale earned a Bronze (Specialty Beer), Pittsburgh's Penn Brewing Chocolate Meltdown won Bronze (Chocolate Beer) and Meadville's Voodoo Brewing Big Black Voodoo Daddy won Silver (aged beer).

252 medals were awarded, chosen from 4,809 competition entries from 745 breweries, hailing from 49 states, plus Washington, D.C.

A final note: for the last several years, Pennsylvania has always been the largest medal-winning state in the East, but its total of 14 for 2013 was matched Virginia, due primarily to six wins by the incredible Devil's Backbone Brewing Co. Base Camp and three by Port River Brewing.--JACK CURTIN

*Beer Yard GABF statistics differ from the official ones posted by the Brewers Association every year because we assign wins to the actual location the beers were brewed rather than the corporate headquarter address of multi-location brewers.
